Past Aircraft Judging Information

 

We will present Champion and Reserve Champion awards in each of 13 classes:

Homebuilt Metal  (example: Van’s RV series)
Homebuilt Wood  (example: Falco or GP4)
Homebuilt Tube and Fabric (example: most biplane types)
Homebuilt Composite (example: Lancair, Glasair)
Antique (certified, built prior to September 1st, 1945)
Classic (certified, built Sept 1, 1945 to Dec 31, 1955)
Custom Classic (same dates as Classic, see note below)
Contemporary (certified, built Jan 1st, 1956 to Dec 31st, 1970)
Light-Sport Plane (aircraft other than factory built that are N-numbered, certificated Experimental Amateur Built 
                               or Experimental Light-Sport, and eligible to be flown by a Sport Pilot)

Ultralight (qualified under FAR Part 103)
Warbird (all)
Rotorcraft (any)
Auto Engine (any alternative powerplant)

A SERFI Grand Champion and a SERFI Reserve Grand Champion are selected from the pool of Champions and Reserve Champions.  These two aircraft are considered “Best of Show”.

Although the above class structure is not identical to that used at EAA Airventure, we do adhere to EAA judging standards.  Aircraft owners are encouraged to review the Official EAA Judging Standards Manual, which may be downloaded Here.

Awards are announced at the Saturday evening banquet in the Big Red Hangar.  If you have a nice airplane, you should attend the banquet !

Special note to Classic and Custom Classic Owners - Please be aware of the different standards for these two classes.  The perfect “Classic” is the one that most closely approaches factory fresh condition.  Authenticity is to be emphasized. Any variation from “as delivered when new” (with the exception of safety items and necessary alterations to meet current FAR requirements) will result in deductions on the standard judging sheet. A “Custom Classic” has no restrictions on alterations and upgrades.  Attractive alterations will result in additions on the judging sheet.

If you have restored your aircraft to be exactly as it was when new (dope finish, original panel, original engine configuration, authentic all the way), then you belong in “Classic”.  If you have restored your aircraft using the latest and greatest of everything (poly paint, stainless screws, glass-panel instruments, big engine, etc) then you belong in “Custom Classic”.
